Skeletal Dysplasias
نویسنده
چکیده
This is a good radiological text covering occult traumatic lesions of the cervical, lower thoracic, and lumbar spine, especially for residents in radiology, neurosurgery, neurology, and orthopedics. The book reviews a topic which has not been widely covered in the literature. The major emphasis of this expanded second edition is the cervical spine, comprising seven of its ten chapters. A new chapter correlating radiologic anatomy and pathology with clinical symptoms has been added to the original edition published in 1970. Furthermore, interesting sections were included on optimal visualization techniques and demonstrations of experiments in occult traumatic lesions. In general, the quality of reproduction of radiographs and computed tomography (CT) scans (as well as their discussions) are excellent. The clinician may take exception to some of the comments in Chapter VI on symptoms, such as attributing eight years of intermittent days of "blinding headaches" to a unilateral compression of C2. Overall, however, clinical comments throughout the text are both interesting and useful. Radiographic comments are, in general, excellent in the text. Good CT scan reproductions emphasize bony structures, rather than soft tissues, which is appropriate for this volume. The major emphasis of this text is on conventional radiographic views, with only a single chapter illustrating CT examinations. This is somewhat of a limitation in an era when CT scans are proving more and more useful in spinal trauma diagnosis, particularly in cases of obscure traumatic lesions. Overall, this is a useful text for residents in radiology and other concerned fields, as well as for attending physicians in related specialties. Medical students will also find this book a good introductory radiological text for cervical and thoraco-lumbar spinal trauma.

Skeletal dysplasias in a hospital in southern India.
A hospital based study of skeletal dysplasias was conducted over a period of 2 years in Davangere, Karnataka, in which 169 cases of skeletal dysplasias were studied. One hundred were osteochondrodysplasias and were grouped according to international classification of osteochondrodysplasias. Among the individual cases, osteogenesis imperfecta (13 cases) had the maximum representation. Several ca...
متن کاملA new concept of skeletal dysplasias.
The skeletal dysplasias form a large group of hereditary disorders characterized by abnormal growth and malformations of bone and cartilage. The clinical severity ranges from mildly affected short stature to lethal forms. Spranger classified approximately 200 different skeletal dysplasias in 1992, based on the clinical and radiographic features and the mode of genetic transmission. Etiopathogen...
متن کاملSkeletal Dysplasias: Growing Therapy for Growing Bones
Skeletal dysplasias represent a large and diverse group of rare conditions affecting collagen and bone. They can be clinically classified based on radiographic and physical features, and many can be further defined at a molecular level (Bonafe et al., 2015). Early diagnosis is critical to proper medical management including pharmacologic treatment when available. Patients with severe skeletal d...
متن کاملDermatoglyphs in skeletal dysplasias.
Finger and palm print patterns (dermatoglyphs) are formed in very early pregnancy, at about the same time the limbs are developing, and their formation probably depends upon the surface contours of the palms and soles during morphogenesis. Dermatoglyphs are useful in skeletal dysplasias for the detection and study of syndactyly and symphalangism, for dating the onset and the dysplasias, for dem...
متن کاملTherapeutic potential of CNP for skeletal dysplasias
Background We had revealed that C-type natriuretic peptide (CNP) is a potent stimulator of endochondral bone growth by using transgenic and knockout mice: transgenic mice with targeted overexpression of CNP in cartilage develop prominent skeletal overgrowth [1], whereas mice depleted with CNP exhibit impaired endochondral bone growth [2]. We planned to translate this effect of CNP into the ther...
متن کاملGenetic heterogeneity in skeletal dysplasias.
Certain skeletal dysplasias represent excellent examples of genetic heterogeneity. Clinical recognition of their individual characteristics is a fundamental prerequisite for an understanding of their pathogenetic mechanisms and for the identification of their basic molecular defects.
